The book also touches briefly on Mary’s later life physical illnesses of fractures, diabetes, and possibly tabes dorsalis, a specific along the spinal column disorder linked though not demonstrated to likely be brought on by untreated syphilis yet much more probably to your prolonged diabetes.

In the final analysis, Emerson successfully argues a sympathetic and balanced reading of Mary Lincoln’s psychological state, bringing new light to the family and legal ramifications that trapped Mary Lincoln in an institutional maze. The book’s winning aspect is that it’s thorough in its research and written in a nuanced tone. Instead of condemning or cursing Mary or Robert, Emerson portrays them as the complicated figures of history, as time shaped them and the circumstances and tragic events that happened in their lives.

Emerson's arguments are convincing from a historical and psychological point of view. The book boasts authenticity and emotional depth because he uses newly discovered documents. But then, in some instances, when he relies too much on retrospective diagnosis, he reads 19th-century behavior through 21st-century medical lenses, by the way. However, he tends to stay away from overindulging in ungrounded regions, and his conclusions are always trailed by suitable caveats.

It makes sense that Emerson’s evidence of Mary’s chronic mental illness is strong: after all, she suffered the loss of three of her four children, the assassination of her husband, and spent decades being publicly derided. Her odd behavior—though often exaggerated by the media of the time—fits with symptoms of mood disorder such as bipolar disorder. With the help of behavioral observations and accounts from third parties, Emerson constructs this case in this historical context without the help of modern diagnostic tools that ground such a case in the modern world.

The best revisionist part of the book is perhaps his defense of Robert Lincoln. In previous accounts, Robert is painted as an opportunistic man, while Emerson shows Robert as a dutiful, dutiful son held to responsibility. Emerson’s findings that Robert’s actions were in keeping with the letter of the law and contemporary expectations, although harsh by modern standards, are congruent with each other.

The book could only improve one area of discussion, and that would be Mary's physical and neurological conditions in her later years. Emerson mentions the theory that she could have had tabes dorsalis (i.e., a neurological form of damage to the nerve cells surrounding the spinal cord), very likely because of diabetes as opposed to syphilis, but does not explore the implication of this diagnosis or how it may overlap with her psychological symptoms. A richer, more holistic view of her health decline could have unfolded, deepening the intersection a bit more.
